Timely Tip – Late Fall Mowing

Mowing practices should be changed for the last couple cuttings of the season.  Over the course of the last several cuttings, lower your mowing height to about two inches.  The final cut of the season should be at 1-3/4”.  The lower mowing height ensures optimal tillering and shoot growth in the spring and keeps mice and voles from burrowing into the grass during winter months.

If the lawn remains long through the winter there are increased chances of snow mold damage during the late winter.  A closely cut lawn will also look better through the early winter, keeping its green color longer, often until the end of December or beginning of January.
